In this quarter's issue...

June 2008

The latest issue of SQ explores the idea of transition. Triggered by the metaphor that spinning presents (after all, isn't turning from fluff into thread a significant transition?) we explore the ch-ch-changes in our spinning lives:

  • Lorraine Smith makes the switch from studying for six years to being a graduate of the Spinning Certificate Program, noticing that it feels like moving from crazyville to even crazierville, although it certainly does open up a host of spinning possibilities.
  • This issue's two designs help you manage when the weather is all over the place and you might just need that extra bit of warmth around your shoulders. An original, simple, turtleneck capelet is featured, as well as a variation on Raspberry Rhapsody from Clara Parke's "The Knitter's Book of Yarn" (Potter Craft). Both of these designs are easy to spin and knit, and as a summer project they are light, portable and require relatively small amounts of yarn.
  • SQ Mom tells us about a life-changing trip she took to Peru, where she participated in a range of artisan workshops from local experts while immersing herself in the inspirational fibre traditions of this cloth-rich nation.
  • Two books are reviewed in this issue: the aforementioned "Knitter's Book of Yarn," and Maggie Casey's "Start spinning: Everything you need to know to make great yarn".

We also feature an update on this year's International Back-to-Back Wool Challenge, prizes are doled out, and oodles of sources are cited so you can find that nifty vendor you've been looking for. SQ...coming soon to a mailbox near you!
